Peregrine Falcons Growing Up
Boy, in just a couple weeks, they go from fluffy little chicks the size of… well, of an egg, to Raptors-In-Training.

There are still three chicks in the scrape. The one with its wings spread has been spreading them a lot. The other two don’t seem quite as eager to fly yet. You can’t see it in this screen grab, but the fourth egg is still in the next box. I would have guessed that it would have been eaten or pushed out by now.
This clutch should be ready to fly before much longer.
It’s too bad the Hawk Ridge Peregrine Watch in Duluth doesn’t have a webcam set up. On the other hand, it’s nice that they have people there to help interpret. And of course, webcams or people – both cost money. This is a good question – when is it better to just make people aware of something, even at the most basic level; and when is it better to really teach people about something, even if you are reaching far fewer people?
This is the quandary of technology in education, isn’t it? Gizmos alone won’t necessarily do the job, but unless people are even aware of something, how will they ever be ready to take the next step? Which comes first – the falcon or the egg?

3 Chicks and an Egg
It’s been a 75% successful hatch, as shown on the Falcon Cam:
You can see Mom (or Dad) outside on the timber, and you can see the egg that didn’t make it in the middle of the screen. The other three look fluffy and healthy (to me, at least). There are a few feathers visible in this screen grab, but there have been several times when it looks like a pigeon practically exploded in the scrape.
